A Debt We Can Never Repay

May 26, 2025

On Memorial Day, it’s not about politics. It’s not about parties. It’s about people.

Men and women who put on the uniform knowing full well they might never come back. Who stood a post, crossed oceans, and gave everything—not for recognition, but because they believed in something greater than themselves.

Some were young, barely out of high school. Some were fathers and mothers. Some had plans that never got to unfold. What they all had in common was a willingness to give their lives for others.

Today, we remember them.

We remember that our barbecues, our flags, our freedom to speak and disagree—all of it exists because someone else stood up when it counted.

As someone who’s worked closely with veterans and comes from a family that knows the cost of service, I don’t take this day lightly. We owe these heroes more than a hashtag. We owe them reflection. We owe them commitment. And most of all, we owe them action—by building a country worthy of their sacrifice.

To those who never came home, and to the families who carry that weight every day: we see you. We remember you. And we thank you.

With Humility,

Darius Mayfield
